Yin yoga is a gentle and mindful style of yoga. You hold gentle seated or laying postures for a few minutes, with the intention to gently open the deeper layers of muscle. Yin yoga is about finding a position and then remaining relatively still there. Yin yoga can be relaxing, as well as emotionally and energetically clearing.
Yin poses are gentle. 40-60% effort. Not aggressive. Here are some yin yoga guidelines:
1. Remain relatively still
2. Never fight through pain! Yin yoga is not about pushing through pain. If you are feeling aggressive sensations, particularly through your spine/joints, please come out of the posture and make an adjustment. If you are not sure how to modify, you can email me at [email protected] and I am happy to share some options that may serve you.
3. Allow any emotional release that may arise to come through you. These longer/gentler yin poses sometimes can stir up old emotional wounds that were stifled and stored in the deeper muscle tissue. Allow yourself to clear whatever comes through you, if your body wants to. If you don’t feel emotional release during your practice, that’s perfectly okay too! There’s no right or wrong way. Every practice is unique.
4. You don’t need to worry about controlling or turning off your thoughts. I recommend n surrendering to the moment instead. Be present with yourself and notice the sensations that arise through your mind & body. Listen to your body.
5. If you find yourself getting overwhelmed by distractions or thoughts, you are welcome to focus on your exhale breath to release the distraction. If you find yourself getting tired and dosing off, you are welcome to focus on your inhale breath to draw in revitalizing energy, sometimes referred to as “chi” or “qi.”
a. If you do happen to get frequently distracted or if you fall asleep, please don’t shame yourself or mentally punish yourself! It’s okay. While those aren’t necessarily the point/intention of practicing yin yoga, it’s absolutely okay if that’s your experience. Just take note.
6. This yin yoga series is infused with Reiki to serve your highest good. Trust that you will receive exactly what you need — mentally, physically, energetically, emotionally, & spiritually — from the following postures.
7. Listen to your body. You hold the power of the Universe within you. Never forget that!
